So all Thursday I roamed the exhibitors at the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC for short), looking at and learning about stuff I want to write about and/or buy for my own consumer/professional use.
I took some time to stare in awe at the large, lovely TVs. One, because almost everybody asks me about them. Two, because I was there. Sony, Samsung, LG, and others. Hi-Def. 4K. Ultra-Hi-Def (5K and more). 3D. 3D 4K. OLED (Organic LED). Quantum Dot. Expanded dynamic range, or something like that. Stunning and lovely. Probably not cheap, either. Continue reading
The CES show floor(s) opened 10AM (possibly slightly earlier in spots) Wednesday morning January 6. I decided to head for the Sands and Venetian exhibitor areas, in particular for the Eureka Park zone, which has lots of startups, crowdfund and pre-crowdfund. (Alas, I didn’t make it to the high-end audio stuff in the Venetian — not on any of my beats, but lovely stuff worth looking at.)
I saw everything on my list there plus a bunch of other stuff, zoomed over to the Las Vegas Convention Center for a quick pass through part of South Hall, and then went to the Showstoppers evening press/analyst-only event, where I saw yet more stuff. Including some I saw the previous night, or earlier on Wednesday, but that gave me the chance to fill in some details. (And at the Withings booth in the Sands, I got to briefly meet master magician Penn Jillette, get his autograph, and also a picture of both of us.) (In case you didn’t know, I’m not just a fan of magic, I’m also a [very] amateur magician.)
Here’s a quick list of some intriguing stuff I saw — with, again, the disclaimer that I may have got some facts wrong here, and I’m simply reporting what I saw or was told, I haven’t tried stuff, etc. (Yet.) Continue reading
The show floor doesn’t open until Wednesday morning, but thanks to the Pepcom’s Tuesday evening press/media-only event, and also to Discover Blue, the Bluetooth press/media event, ShowStoppers’ LaunchIT, and the general miasma of Press Day (press conferences the day before the floor opens), I’ve already seen a bunch of interesting stuff. Here’s a highlight handful. Prices and other info subject to my having taken notes badly, I’ll recheck when I can…
With New Year’s Day now a few days old, it’s time once again for me (and thousands of my press/media colleagues) to head to Las Vegas for the annual CES (which used to stand for, and continues to be referred to as the Consumer Electronics Show), where thousands of vendors and resellers will hawk new and recent stuff to potential buyers and resellers, and to us press/media types.
Well-meaning friends and business say, “Have a fabulous time.” Those who have been know that simply getting to seeing most of what we want, without losing or breaking anything, constitutes success. Shows like CES, and before it, Comdex and the larger Interops of yore, saturate and gridlock the roads, restaurants, taxi lines and more… and this year’s new security restrictions by CES aren’t likely to make things any easier.
What do I expect to see at CES 2016?
